Boarding can never replace home. However, Harlin House is a small boarding house catering from Year 7 to Year 12 boys in a family atmosphere that aims to provide an environment that is as close as possible to home.

Brisbane Grammar places the highest priority on learning and accommodates students by providing computerised library facilities, modern science laboratories, music, art and photography facilities. Brisbane Grammar is one of the first Australian schools to deploy wireless network standards that allow connection speeds five times higher than average. The School also boasts the recently opened state-of-the-art indoor sports centre, swimming pool and Northgate playing fields.

Harlin House is fully air-conditioned. Years 11 and 12 boys reside in individual rooms while other year levels have private spaces with a bed and study desk. Junior and senior recreational areas are set up with audiovisual equipment, indoor activities and daily newspapers. The Boarding House has a computer room where all boys have Email and Internet access. Computer classrooms and the Library are also available to boarders after school hours.

A Dietician is employed to oversee the quality of the meals provided to the boys in the dining room. The meals are of excellent quality and a wide variety of meals is provided. A committee, which includes staff and boys, reviews the menu regularly. To view this term's menu, click here.

Staff

A Senior Resident Housemaster and Assistant Housemaster lead Harlin House. They are ably assisted by a number of resident tutors, some of who are also full-time teaching staff. A qualified nursing sister manages a well-equipped health centre.

All Boarding Masters have Blue Cards for child related employment.

Study

An advantage of boarding is the added time in which students can apply themselves to their studies. Every night from Monday to Friday, students learn the advantages of disciplined study in preparation for later years of education, especially in Year 12 and further education. The supportive environment in which the boy’s study, helps boarders achieve successful academic results.

Activities

At weekends, together with GPS sport, the boarders have arranged activities in which they are encouraged to participate. Throughout the year boarders have use of the state-of-the-art Indoor Sports Centre and tennis courts. Boarders have access to music practice facilities and to computer stations which are linked to the School network. Events with girls’ boarding schools in Brisbane provide opportunities for social interaction and development.

Maintaining Family Ties

The House aims to maintain a family atmosphere; the diversity of backgrounds and interests serves to enrich the lives of its members. At the same time each boarder’s ties with his family are regarded as important and the School maintains regular communication with parents.
